Something I'm pondering...

God tells us we're chosen by him; predestined to be his child long before our birth. (Romans 8, Ephesians 1) In my limited understanding, I take this to refer to those of whom will be saved by grace and live eternally with Him. Not to mean that everyone born is, in fact, chosen of God. I don't think being loved and being chosen are the same.

So really, we are not all chosen. If we were, we would all go to heaven and there would be no need for hell, which would, of course, falsify the entire gospel because God wouldn't be who he said he was.

If we were to tell everyone we met that they were chosen and beloved by God, wouldn't that basically be Universalism? Does that make any sense?

I think in cases like this, it really proves that theology does matter when it comes to witnessing (among many things). And yes, I'm taking a not-so-slight turn to deeper matters than my plants. :)

Right on. But you can say that to believers (even people that are so-called believers) because they at least claim to be believers. But only with perseverance can chosen-ness be proven.

Okay, my first comment was that I think I know where these thoughts are at least partially coming from...and I thought you summarized things extremely well, Em. I also mentioned that it's the love part, rather than the chosen, that has my mind in knots.
