So I work with a lot of different families and am often in their home observing their everyday life, which is sometimes fairly standard (to me anyways). But other families can also do life very interestingly. Sometimes I'm amused or intrigued or find myself shaking my head and being totally weirded out.
Anyways...cleaning habits/standards are always interesting to me and have lead me to ask you this very important question...
How often do you wash your sheets? Because in one of my foster homes all the girls bring down their sheets every Saturday morning and this got me wondering if it should be that often?
I mean growing up I remember a time where my sheets got washed almost everyday (oh wait, that was because I wet the bed almost every night and had to carry down my sheets to the laundry room in the morning, a painfully embarrassing walk that took me past the breakfast table where my older siblings would slurp their Fruity Pebbles and make snide remarks about my poor bladder control.)
In college my sheets got washed like once, maybe twice a semester (a little gross I admit).
Now they get washed more often, but I'm still undecided on how often is appropriate.

oh my, I laughed out loud on that bladder control paragraph. Hilarious.
Oh man, I don't think I want to admit how NOT often we wash our sheets. Probably more than once or twice a semester, but not as often as once a week. I'd say that's a SAFE answer, huh?!
I wash the boys sheets if they appear dirty which is usually when the boys jump on their beds with sand in their pockets...or when I've caught up with other laundry...which tends to vary. =) If I clean my room, I have to wash our sheets and duvet or it doesn't seem done. With a newborn in the house, sheets get changed almost daily due to various disasters like spit up. I change my pillow case more often than our sheet and keep some extras in my closet...how is that for odd. Glad you can add our house to your list of mental norms and un-norms. =)

I think weekly is a bit excessive. We do every 2-3 I'd guess and we're normal in just about every other area of life, so I'd follow my advice. :)
Glad you're liking BSF...
I don't like to admit this kind of thing. I really like sarah's answer so I'll go with that:).
I saw these bed sheets at the top of your post and I thought...oh good she is asking what kind of bed sheets people like or what their favorite is and I thought "I am going to get some good answers from Em's blog". I always am curious what type of sheets are "good" and "comfy" sheets. I just can't find any I really like. Perhaps you could do a post on this sometime for me:).
hehe. i got the giggles on your bladder issues too! hahaha. too funny.
yeah...washing sheets....um, er..well...i'm going to go wash my sheets...right now :)
I was just contemplating this issue last night. interesting at the time I was thinking this, you were writing it.
I was laying in bed trying to remember the last time they had gotten washed... :)
Sandra, I'm no sheet expert, but I do know the higher thread count the better. My favorite sheets are jersey sheets, I call them "t-shirt sheets". I break and use regular cotton ones in the summer, but fall/winter I definitely bring out my staple sheets. They're so comfortable!
Sounds like everyone else is on the same page as me...as in, not washing sheets as often as one should. :) I think I'm going to go with once a month seems fair unless you have sickness or babies spitting up.
Oh Em- when I first read your post today I thought- Oh No! she's gonna say how often her mom washed her sheets :) (after you were out of the wetting stage, that is) Thanks for not revealing that it wasn't a weekly occurence!
Laura and I were just having this conversation last week when I was staying with Taye and she asked me to wash the kid's sheets (which she tries to do every week!) I confessed that ours don't get done that often, but I did wash them today....and that was BEFORE I read your blog! They do smell so nice when they're clean :)
Hmmm glad to know I'm not the only college student who only washes sheets once or twice a semester......much to my mother's distress. ;)
And haha about your bladder control comment.... :)
I read your blog yesterday and didn't comment because I couldn't admit how often I change our sheets. Glad to see there are other people like me:) Yes, if there is spit up or sickness they are changed more often:)
Thanks Em, I'll try those Jersey Sheets. Crazy as this is...but I have tried higher count sheets and well...let just say they don't last me more than a year!! I must kick my feet while I sleep or do something strage because within a year I have a big worn out HOLE in the lower half of my sheets. All of a sudden I'll find my foot getting stuck in a hole and low and behold...they are TORN!! I have found the higher the count the quicker I tend to rip them:(. Believe it or not, but I am currently using these STIFF sheets to see if I rip them too:(. Crazy I know. I basically put sheets on my list for christmas every year and well, I didn't even make it a year on this last 500ct. sheet set.
OK - I just had to jump into the discussion on sheets! I definitely won't admit how often I change our sheets (it would never be considered excessive!) but as it relates to type, I've become a huge fan of Egyptian cotton sheets. They are generally a high thread count but the quality is fabulous - very soft. The more you launder them, the better they get. The best place to buy them is Tuesday Morning. They get their stock from closeouts from high end department stores and the selection is usually good. Marsha is hooked on them as well. Also - Tuesday Morning is the best place to buy towels - great, fluffy towels at a great price.
Great input Marcelle!
Sandra, I think you should take her advice. :)
